Currency
The official monetary unit in the Dominican Republic is the peso (written RD$), which is made up of 100 centavos. Most places in the Republic accept the United States dollar. U.S. one dollar bills are extremely popular for tipping.
There is a law (which is not usually enforced) that requires visitors to change at least $100(USD) into pesos. Though this law is mostly ignored, it may be enforced without advance notice. For that reason, it is important, when making a currency exchange, to get a receipt. This will be proof that a currency exchange was made, should the issue arise.
Currency may be exchanged at Casas de Cambio – general hours: 8 am to 8 pm and banks – general hours: 8:30 am to 6 pm. Daily rates can be found at http://www.xe.com/ucc
To get the best exchange rates, it is recommended that travelers use credit cards whenever possible. Major credit cards are a must for some places, like hotels and rental car agencies, and are generally accepted at most major businesses around.
